Brendan Fraser is one funny man; I know this for I have always loved his antics in his movies. If you know that movie, Bedazzled, where Brendan Fraser starred as a guy who sold his soul to a voluptuous devil (played by Elizabeth Hurley) in exchange of the attention of her love, Brendan was so funny as hell there!

And now, Brendan Fraser comes back in the comedy movie scene with “Furry Vengeance“.

Furry Vengeance? Sounds like a movie with a bunch of talking animals taking revenge on human race, right? Right! (Well, not quite).

Furry Vengeance revolves around Dan Sanders (Brendan Fraser), a real estate developer tasked to develop a forest into a luxurious residential village (complete with “forest-themed” malls). Of course, the animals in the said forest are blatantly against this move – so they decided to stop Dan in completing his job, in the most funny way. 

Personally, I enjoyed Furry Vengeance. However, I will be impartial in criticizing this movie.

Right from the start, you’ll notice that the movie does not revolve on a “larger” ground, meaning that you will see the same venue/ place in the movie from start to finish. Well, it does fit on the theme right (forest, nature development, animasl)?

Also, people will EXPECT that the animals here will TALK. But no, they DON’T. some people are tired with movies that have talking dogs and cats, but it’s sure is more problematic if you see an animal-related movie with no talking animals. Some people are good in translating comedic-antics through physical action, but some are not and find such actions practically silly. It will be a big plus if at least the animals will have funny voices.

On the plus side though, the acting of all the characters in the movie are superb. The antics are funny if you give it chance. Well,  some dialogues and antics are “not quite there yet”, but over all, it’s good enough. You really have to watch this with a “light mood” to appreciate this movie.

All in all, if you have nothing to do and you feel like watching a “feel-good movie”, then go with Furry Vengeance!

Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams are just two of the stars joining the ensemble cast of the new Woody Allen romantic comedy, ‘Midnight in Paris,’ shooting in the City of Lights this summer.

The veteran auteur announced Tuesday that Wilson and McAdams will join a cast that includes Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard and Michael Sheen.

‘Midnight in Paris’ celebrates a young man’s great love for Paris, and "simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better." The storyline follows a family traveling to the city for business, including a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey.

The inaugural Insomnia Movie Theater gets a truly infamous movie. One that’s so transcendently awful it actually becomes entertaining. It single-handedly killed the career of Barry Pepper and relegated John Travolta to the occasional supporting role and object of self-parody. That’s right rat-brains, it’s the multi-Razzie-award-winning trainwreck, “Battlefield Earth.”

“Battlefield Earth” is like a unicorn, a shitty, shitty unicorn. You hear stories about it, you completely doubt its existence and then once you’ve actually seen it, it’s so surreal, you think you imagined it. There’s so much wrong with this movie it’s hard to know where to begin. Even the character names are horrible.

Barry Pepper plays Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (see!), a member of a small, caveman-like tribe of humans in the year 3,000. When his father dies, he leaves his tribe in search of what lies beyond his desolate home. During his travels he meets Carlo, played by Kim Coates (Tig from “Sons of Anarchy”) and an armada of giant, dreadlocked aliens collectively known as Psychlos. They are led by Travolta’s scene chewing Terl.

Terl despises humans and Earth and when he gets the bad news that he has to stay there for another 50 cycles (with endless options for renewal), he snaps and decides to start training humans to use alien technology so that they can secretly mine gold for him. That’s the plot. Right there. “Battlefield Earth” basically boils down to a giant gold heist.

And how does Jonnie Goodboy (seriously?) and the rest of the gang react to this? Well, once they learn how to use alien technology, they meet up with some other cavemen, learn to fly harriers and kill the enter alien insurrection in one fell swoop.

If “Battlefield Earth” is memorable for anything it’s Travolta’s scene-chewing and director Roger Christian’s love of slow motion and squibs.

Here’s how I imagine the conversation between Christian and Travolta regarding his character Terl.

Christian: You play Terl. He’s a world weary leader, fed up with the bureaucracy of his superiors. Finally he resorts to betraying his comrades. How do you want to play the character?

Travolta: Like a flamboyant high school drama teacher.

Seriously, Travolta’s overdramatic verbal flourishes, such as when he says “top of my class” in the first clip becomes a running gag. By the movie’s conclusion, it’s hard not to find him oddly endearing, if only because he’s the king of the turd mountain that is the movie.

On a production level the movie is hilarious as it features some of the worst green screen and scaling effects ever committed to film. When we get to see the planet Psychlo, visually, it’s on par with one of the Action Pack made-for-TV-movies from the mid-nineties.

And the writing, oh, the writing. There’s so much cheesy dialog that our own Eric Melin came up with a drinking game for watching “Battlefield Earth.” Here are the rules:

• Drink whenever anyone says, “rat-brain.”
• Drink whenever anyone says, “leverage.”
• Drink whenever anyone says, “man-animal.”
• Drink whenever anyone says, “blow the dome.”
• Drink whenever anyone says, “Psychlo.”

• Drink whenever anyone yells, “No!”
• Drink whenever the movie slips into slow motion.

I should point out here that if you were to follow these instructions to the letter you will die of alcohol poisoning within the movie’s first hour.

Until “I Know Who Killed Me” earned 8 Golden Raspberries, “Battlefield Earth” was tied with “Showgirls” for the most dishonors by a single film. In 2000, it won worst director, worst actor, worst supporting actor, worst supporting actress, worst screen couple, worst screenplay and worst picture.

You would think that having the rest of the decade as a buffer for other horrible films to replace or at least match the scorn critics had for it. “Battlefield Earth” won Worst “Drama” of Our First 25 Years and Worst Picture of the Decade golden raspberries. Screenwriter J.D. Shapiro even publicly apologized for it.

There are some movies like “Blade Runner” or “Alien” that are initially poorly received, but after enough time passes finds its audience and is eventually rightfully appreciated. “Battlefield Earth” is not one of those movies. It is laughable, though. Then again, so is “Plan 9 From Outer Space.”

“SLC Punk!” is a strange amalgamation of elements that seem to be operating at cross-purposes. It has passages reminiscent of John Hughes, “Sid and Nancy,” and Tarantino, a tone that convincingly encompasses dramatic shifts in temperament and energy, and a disjointed narrative structure that is much more idiosyncratic in its presentation than its actual sequence of events.

Directed by James Merendino–a man who all but disappeared into the abyss of low-budget horror filmmaking–”SLC” tells the story of Stevo and Heroin Bob, two punks and recent college graduates living in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1985. Stevo is the blue-haired son of a Harvard educated lawyer and aging hippie mother whose ambitions lie in wreaking low scale havoc and dismantling…well, everything.

As Stevo, Matthew Lillard puts in a performance as surprising as Adam Sandler’s turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Punch-Drunk Love.” There’s a huge energy expenditure on display in his work that is hard to ignore but relatively easy to misunderstand. He emotes so openly and effortlessly that it’s easy to perceive it as hammy, but the way he reigns it all in with subtle characterizations and a conspicuous emotional sincerity is riveting. His narration serves as valuable character insight as well as the only strand of cohesion throughout the entire picture. Without it, we’d be faced with undefined vignettes and chaotic, episodic tangents relaying style and technique but little else.

Opposite Lillard’s Stevo is Michael Goorjian’s Heroin Bob. He’s a nervous wreck of a young punk and our introduction to his character contains self-mutilation (he punches out a mirror and doesn’t attend to the wound he sustained until he passes out in a convenience store) and spastically framed warnings about the dangers of psychedelics. As Stevo points out, Bob neither uses illegal drugs nor welcomes needles in any context, and his ironic nickname turns out more than bittersweet by the film’s closure.

The assortment of characters the two encounter throughout the film is something of a frenzied sub-culture freak show. It’s especially interesting to see a young, pre-”Freaks and Geeks” Jason Segal playing an 18-year-old punk with a bookworm aesthetic and the physical prowess necessary to beat the living crap out of a particularly aggressive band’s bouncer. Seeing a young, post-”Casper,” pre-”Final Destination” Devon Sawa is equally interesting along those same lines.

One thing about the movie that is rather indisputably on point is the soundtrack. The films that achieve this kind of topically relevant, emotionally stimulating, aurally satisfying convergence of sights and sounds are rare indeed. The Exploited’s “Sex and Violence” is perfectly situated during the opening credits and, quite frankly, gives us an insight into two huge aspects of the world we’re about to enter.

The sub-culture the characters embody and the forms of self-expression they embrace are demonstrated in a way that caught me off guard when I saw the film for the first time. For one, LSD was something I never envisioned as being part of the 1980s punk rock era, and Stevo’s adherence to a strangely constructed version of anarchy as a political philosophy literally predicated upon chaos still strikes me as odd. It’s certainly not the social vision Bakhunin had in mind, but that is, I suppose, neither here nor there.

The film is bold and unabashed in its excess and some of it comes across as downright pretentious. But much like the performances, the sincerity pushing it forward makes all the melodramatic setpieces seem like natural outgrowths of the world they’re being depicted within.

Not only is Ronald Reagan’s presidency in the early stages of its final act, but the characters are operating in the Mormon-run city of Salt Lake City, Utah, a religiously oppressive beacon for the Scientology of Christianity. What this locale offers is the remarkable contrast between the desolate, wintry metropolitan feel of the city and the haunting mountainous woodland surrounding it.

What the film winds up saying about punk music is pretty minimal (apart from a wonderful monologue from its hero about the silliness of debating its origins), but what it has to say about the people who not only listened to it but also incorporated it into their lives is immense. The picture it paints isn’t some homogenized, generic branding of “punk” as a musical style rife with arbitrary incomprehensibility and a lifestyle rife with arbitrary hostility.

The people are real, electric, passionate individuals and their mood swings reflect larger vacillations taking place in the broader arena of the rest of the population. Stylishly realized in its grungy glory, the only crime of “SLC Punk!” is that it leaves little room for competitive viewing. Even its conclusion with Stevo sitting on a park bench sits fine with me (with Generation X’s “Kiss Me Deadly” as its concluding song, how could it not?). If I were watching it with a mohawk and studded belt, however, I can see where it might be slightly disheartening.

I’m writing my first blog for the Huffington Post from the set of my next film, Doonby. I’m shooting it here near Austin, Texas and I forgot how hot it can be in Texas. Just sent a runner out for extra strong antiperspirant to keep from staining every T-Shirt!

Doonby is a film that’s been described by the producers as Crazy Heart-meets-It’s A Wonderful Life, but I call it It’s A Wonderful Life without the Wonderful.

Seriously though, it’s a mystery/suspense/thriller and I’m really proud to be a part of it along with my co-stars Robert Davi (remember him from Die Hard?), Jenn Gotzon and the rest. I’ll be blogging and maybe even vlogging from time to time from the set so stay tuned.
