ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Saturday sent its condolences to India’’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the deaths of 159 people in an Air India plane crash earlier in the day. “I was deeply shocked to learn of the tragic crash of an Air India Express aircraft this morning in Karnataka, resulting in the loss of many precious lives,” Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said in the message to Singh. “On behalf of the government and people of Pakistan and on my own behalf, I would like to convey our deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families,” Gilani added.

US drone strike kills 10 in Pakistan: officials

MIRANSHAH: A US drone fired two missiles into a house in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) on Sunday, killing at least 10 rebels, local security officials said.

The strike took place in Inzarkas village, 50 kilometres (31 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district, known as a hub for Taliban and Al-Qaeda linked militants.

“The missiles struck a militant compound in the village, killing at least 10 rebels,” a senior Pakistani security official in the area said on condition of anonymity.

Another security official confirmed the strike and casualties but said the nationalities of those killed in the attack were not yet known.

He said: “The compound became suspicious as it was being used by foreigners.”

Pakistani officials use the term “foreigners” for Al-Qaeda linked militants operating in the tribal regions.

“It was, however, not immediately known if any high-value target was present in the area at the time of attack,” the official said.

US forces have been waging a covert drone war against Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked commanders in the country’’s northwestern tribal belt, where militants have carved out havens in mountainous areas outside direct government control.

More than 900 people have been killed in over 100 drone strikes in Pakistan since August 2008.

BAHAWALPUR: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan’s armed forces are fully capable to cope with the challenges facing the security of the country also in addition to those at its western borders, Geo News reported Sunday.

Addressing a ceremony held on the occasion of the largest army drills, he said Pakistan is facing rafts of challenges at present; however, Pakistan has been endowed with sources and opportunities to cope with them.

The nation is proud of the sacrifices rendered by the Pak Army, he said.

Pakistan’s armed forces are geared up to confront various other challenges than those at its western borders, he emphasized.

Pakistan did a great job in Swat and Waziristan, as the country is serving as an iron wall against the terrorism, he asserted.

Yousuf Raza Gilani Shakes Hand With Indian PM Manmohan Singh

WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani shook hands with Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh at a reception hosted by the US President Barack Obama, reports said.

The leaders of Pakistan and India have met at a nuclear security summit in Washington.Yousuf Raza Gilani spoke to Manmohan Singh during a reception.

A Pakistani embassy spokesman said it was “not a formal meeting”.

“Both leaders were present at the same place and so they shook hands and talked,” he said.

A spokesman for India’s foreign ministry, Vishnu Prakash, told an Indian newspaper that the two leaders “exchanged pleasantries”.

No US Concerns on Pak Nuclear Security Qureshi

WASHINGTON: Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said the talks between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the US President Barrack Obama over civil nuclear energy were held in a cordial atmosphere and the US leader said he has no concerns about the security of nuclear arsenal of Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference at Pakistani embassy in Washington after Pak-US summit, Qureshi said the issue of the energy crisis and civil nuclear technology were discussed in the talks.

Replying a question Qureshi said the nuclear summit will not be focussed on Pakistan.” It is an internal summit and we have arrived with complete homework. Nothing will happen to Pakistan.”
