‘Mad Men’ Creator Upset With The New York Times

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner is a secretive man. And I can’t blame him. If I put as much work into a show as he does, I wouldn’t want people blatantly telling the press what’s going to happen all season.

Last weekend, Alessandra Stanley of The New York Times wrote a season preview of the show and Weiner was none too pleased with her piece.

He says:

“I was shocked – really shocked. I would love to have it known that this was done totally without my approval. Ninety-nine percent of the reporters who wrote about the show did not write about the story. A lot of people told me they were blindsided by (the Stanley article). You’d think the New York Times wouldn’t have to scoop me. It’s bittersweet when you don’t get to have the experience of seeing the show as it was meant to be seen. In some ways, it ruins the show. I’m kind of powerless. It’s the bargain you make: I wanted to have press, and it was nice to get that kind of space with those pictures. The alternative is not to share these things with the press any more – but how can you expect journalists to write about the show if you don’t? It was all very disappointing to me.”

Wow. That’s extremely disappointing.

Mad Men premieres tomorrow night.

James Franco to Get Caught Up in Monkey Business in ‘Rise of the Apes’

James Franco will don a lab coat in ‘Rise of the Apes,’ a prequel to ‘Planet of the Apes,’ according to Variety.

Set in present-day San Francisco, Franco has been cast as an ambitious scientist who plays a pivotal role in the war between humans and apes. The evolutionary timeline is shifted when the two parties get involved in conflict because scientists tinker with genetic engineering in apes. The primates gain intelligence from the experiments and try to take power over people.

Some of the technology behind the stunning cinematography employed in ‘Avatar’ will be attributed to ‘Rise of the Apes’ to animate photo-realistic apes instead of suit actors up in elaborate costumes.
